Apple must remove AI news feature over misinformation, UK journalists’ union says

( January 8, 2025, 11:33 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Apple must remove the AI news feature from its Apple Intelligence offering on newer products, particularly in its summarizing of BBC alerts, the UK’s National Union of Journalists has said. The NUJ is concerned that errors made by the feature — which summarizes multiple notifications from news apps on a device and issues an AI-generated summary that appears to have come from the news outlet — are leading to misinformation and are harming journalism. The union calls Apple Intelligence “unethical and irresponsible,” and is backing the BBC’s calls for the company to stop the alerts after a series of errors, such as the announcement of a sports result before the fixture had begun, and a notification concerning the personal life of Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal....
