China urges UK to respect Jingye's interests in British Steel

( May 14, 2026, 08:38 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China’s Ministry of Commerce said in a statement Thursday that any move by the UK government to nationalize British Steel should take into account the investment and contribution made by Chinese companies, respect market principles and avoid discriminatory treatment. Responding to media reports that London plans to bring British Steel under state ownership through legislation, the ministry noted that the UK government has taken control of the company, owned by China’s Jingye Group, for more than a year. Beijing reiterated that the UK should avoid abusing administrative powers and work with the Chinese company to find a fair and acceptable solution. The ministry also warned that China would closely monitor developments and take measures to protect the lawful rights and interests of Chinese companies.Statement follows (in Chinese). ...
