Netherlands loses appeal to annulled gambling state aid decision

( October 16, 2025, 08:39 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Dutch government has lost its legal challenge to a scrapped decision from 2020, which found that licenses granted by the national gambling authority to several lotteries and betting operators weren't state aid. The General Court had earlier said that the European Commission failed to check if the measure conferred an indirect advantage. In its verdict from Thursday, the EU's top court fully rejected the appeal, saying that the lower court was right in finding that the commission “was required to examine whether there was a direct advantage — and as the case may be, an indirect advantage — resulting from that measure.”The judgment is attached.
