Ampol's $780-million bid for EG approved in Australia with divestments

By Sean Maguire ( June 3, 2026, 06:42 GMT | Insight) -- Ampol, one of Australia's largest fuel retailers, has received conditional clearance to proceed with its $780-million acquisition of EG Group's Australian subsidiary, marking the first Phase 2 clearance under the country's new merger regime. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission found that the deal would likely reduce competition in 39 local markets but allowed it after Ampol agreed to increase its divestment package to 41 sites. Selling those sites to Metro Petroleum is expected to preserve competition, the watchdog said, while still enabling Ampol to expand its network and strengthen fuel supply resilience.Ampol, one of Australia's largest fuel retailers, has received clearance from the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission, or ACCC, to acquire EG Group's Australian subsidiary, subject to divestments to an independent operator....
