South Korea extends behavioral remedies in Hanwha–Daewoo deal, cites persistent dominance

( April 28, 2026, 03:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Hanwha Aerospace, Hanwha Systems and Hanwha Ocean will remain subject to merger remedies for longer after South Korea’s antitrust regulator extended the measures tied to Hanwha’s acquisition of a 49.3 percent stake in Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, now known as Hanwha Ocean. The Korea Fair Trade Commission said Tuesday the vertically integrated deal, which combined shipbuilding with key naval component suppliers, still raises concerns that the group could disadvantage rival shipbuilders through discriminatory pricing or restricted access to technical data. The regulator found Hanwha Ocean remains dominant in naval vessel markets, while Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha Systems hold monopolistic or leading positions in most component segments, limiting alternative sourcing. It extended the remedies by three years, with a possible two-year add-on, while lifting them in two component markets where competition has improved.Statement is attached (in Korean)....
