Japan's Mitsubishi Corp to buy Aethon US shale gas assets for $5.2 billion

( January 16, 2026, 09:13 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japanese trading house Mitsubishi Corporation said in a statement Friday that it is entering the US shale gas sector after agreeing to pay $5.2 billion for all equity interests in Aethon III LLC, Aethon United LP, and related entities and interests. The acquisition, signed with Aethon Energy Management and Aethon's stakeholders, including Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and RedBird Capital Partners, is expected to close in the first quarter of Japan’s fiscal year, April to June of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. Mitsubishi said the acquisition is part of its efforts “to build an integrated value chain in the United States — from upstream gas development to power generation, data center development, chemical production, and related businesses.”Statement follows.
