New EU merger guidance must be evidence-based, Italy’s antitrust commissioner says

Elisabetta Iossa noted that Italy’s 2022 call-in powers for mergers are working well, with the AGCM receiving between 70 and 100 merger notifications a year and opening around five phase II cases annually. Between 2020 and 2024, the authority cleared 90 percent of its investigations with remedies.Additional guidance stemming from the European Commission’s review of the EU merger guidelines must remain firmly grounded in evidence and economic theory, Italy's antitrust commissioner has said....
