Australian government finalizes merger rules, cost-recovery model

( July 1, 2025, 00:53 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Australian government has registered the final rules as the new merger regime takes effect today on a voluntary basis. In the final legislative instrument, the government has updated the cost-recovery framework, introducing a tiered fee structure for merger notifications. While businesses lodging a Phase 1 notification must pay a flat fee of A$56,800 ($37,400), if a deal proceeds to Phase 2 review, additional fees apply based on transaction value. A fee of A$475,000 applies for deals worth A$50 million or less, A$855,000 for deals over A$50 million and up to A$1 billion, and A$1.595 million for deals exceeding A$1 billion.
