Complex mergers face steep review fees in Australian cost-recovery model

The Treasury Department suggests that deals proceeding to a “Phase 2” review will attract a fee of A$952,000 ($618,000) — in addition to the A$56,000 already required for the initial “Phase 1” filing — to fully recover the costs of the antitrust regulator's merger review activities. Dealmakers may be asked to cough up over a million Australian dollars for the privilege of having a transaction reviewed by the mergers watchdog, under a proposal put forward by the Australian government....
