Rewe to pay EUR70 million fine for unit's gun-jumping, Austrian court says

( February 4, 2025, 15:36 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Rewe will have to pay the highest antitrust fine ever imposed in Austria, after the nation's Supreme Court increased a penalty from 1.5 million to 70 million euros, the court said today. The fine is for a prohibited implementation of a merger. When a 2018 lease agreement came into force, Rewe unit Merkur Warenhandels AG, now Billa Plus, took over sales areas at a shopping center in the city of Wels, without notifying the deal. The level of Austrian fines should be aligned to what has been common practice at EU level and several member states for a long time, the court said.Statement follows (in German). ...
