OpenAI moves for judgment against authors’ US copyright claims

( September 4, 2026, 17:36 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: OpenAI told a US federal judge that its transformative use of authors’ copyrighted works has not harmed them, moving for summary judgment against infringement claims. “The undisputed evidence in this case shows that, at most, 0.00007% of ChatGPT conversation logs ‘regurgitated’ content from plaintiffs’ books and when this rare event does happen, the amount of text regurgitated was typically a few dozen words. So plaintiffs complain that ChatGPT can provide ‘summaries’ of their books, but this content is no different from commonplace excerpts or summaries that anyone can read for free on the Internet, and has had no negative impact on the market for plaintiffs’ books,” it argued.
