Amid government shutdown threat, USPTO banking on reserves

By Melissa Ritti ( September 30, 2025, 18:13 GMT | Insight) -- The clock is ticking on a potential shutdown of the federal government, but a primarily fee-funded US Patent and Trademark Office will remain operational — so long as its operating reserve holds out. “Most USPTO employees will need to be furloughed” once that $879 million balance is depleted, however, the Department of Commerce said late Monday.It will be business as usual at the US Patent and Trademark Office tomorrow if Congress can't agree today on an appropriations bill to fund the federal government....
