Peru–Chile geographical-indication battle over 'PISCO' rights settled in Indian court

On July 7, the Delhi High Court issued a landmark ruling regarding the geographical indication rights for the liquor in India, a contentious issue between Peru and Chile. The court overturned a 2018 order that had granted Peru exclusive, unqualified rights to the term "PISCO." Instead, the Delhi High Court directed the GI Registrar to modify Peru's existing registration to "Peruvian PISCO" and to process Chile's application for "Chilean PISCO."In a spirited showdown over the iconic South American liquor PISCO, a decades-long international dispute between Peru and Chile found its way to an Indian courtroom. The two countries have been fiercely contesting exclusive rights to the term "PISCO," each asserting that their version of the grape-based brandy holds the rightful claim to the name....
