JPO reports shorter patent timelines, rising design filings, lower trademark volumes

( July 7, 2025, 06:05 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Japan Patent Office reported that in 2024, patent and design filings increased while trademark filings declined year-on-year. According to its annual report released today, the final patent registration for patent applications filed in 2019 — the latest year for which complete outcome data is available — rose to 60 percent, continuing an upward trend. Design and trademark examination resulted in registration rates of 89 percent and 88 percent, respectively, both higher than the previous year. Average times to first action and grant in patent examinations were 9 and 13 months, respectively, both down from fiscal year 2023 levels. AI-related patent filings continued to grow, and legislative changes expanded protection for digital designs and non-traditional marks.
