USPTO ends accelerated examination for utility patents

( June 11, 2025, 12:22 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The US Patent and Trademark Office has discontinued the Accelerated Examination program for utility patents. The program, launched in 2006, allowed utility applications to be examined out-of-turn. Ending the program "frees up examining resources to be devoted to older, unexamined utility applications, thereby supporting our broader efforts to reduce pendency," the USPTO said. There has also been a "steady decline" in requests for accelerated examination in recent years, the office said, totalling less than 100 per year since 2014.  A similar accelerated examination program for design applications will continue.See the Federal Register notice attached....
