Law to harmonize corruption offences, penalties across EU approved by govts

( April 21, 2026, 10:44 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A new law that harmonizes the definition of corruption and related penalties across the EU has been approved by European governments. It will ensure offenses including bribery, misappropriation, trading in influence, and obstruction of justice, are defined and treated in a similar way across the EU, they said. Offenders would face prison sentences from three to five years and corporate fines from 3 percent to 5 percent of their total turnover, depending on the offense. The law, which will come into force 20 days after it is published in the EU's Official Journal, replaces two older EU laws. Press release follows....
