South Korea codifies attorney-client privilege for the first time

( January 30, 2026, 08:30 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea has formally codified attorney-client privilege for the first time after the National Assembly passed an amendment to the Attorney-at-Law Act. The revision introduces a new provision that grants lawyers and their clients the right to refuse disclosure of confidential communications made in the course of legal representation or in anticipation of the attorney-client relationship. It also restricts investigative authorities from compelling the submission or inspection of documents tied to legal representation, except where the client consents or there is overriding public interests.
