The proposal depends on stronger global aviation carbon rules, a prospect which experts consider unlikely. It also extends support for sustainable aviation fuels, or SAF, until 2040, though experts argue production support will also be needed to meet the bloc's long-term SAF blending targets.The review of the European Commission's Emissions Trading System, published on July 17, reflects a compromise between climate ambition and the risk of international backlash, while betting that global aviation carbon rules will eventually be strengthened — an assumption that experts question....
