EU methane rules guidance endorses trace-and-claim compliance for importers

By Louis de Briant ( July 20, 2026, 16:17 GMT | Insight) -- The European Commission issued two nonbinding recommendations to facilitate implementation of the EU Methane Regulation, endorsing trace-and-claim and certification systems for importers in complex supply chains and recommending a three-year suspension of penalties for noncompliance. The guidance is intended to provide legal certainty while preserving security of supply, without changing the regulation itself.Gas and crude oil importers in complex supply chains will be able to use "trace and claim" and certification systems to prove compliance with EU law through verified documentation rather than physical tracking under one of two nonbinding recommendations on the EU Methane Regulation published on Monday (see here)....
