Weak Spanish voltage control contributed to April 2025 blackout, trade body says

( March 20, 2026, 13:19 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A failure to contain a rapid voltage surge partly led to the April 28, 2025 blackout in Spain and Portugal, with limited reactive power reserves and cascading technical issues amplifying the disruption, the trade association for European electricity transmission system operators has said. In a report, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, or Entso-E, said the system’s inability to stabilize in real time triggered widespread disconnections. The association called for for tighter operational standards, better real-time tools and stronger coordination, alongside regulatory changes.Summary follows.
