Slew of EU member states warned to quit Energy Charter Treaty

( January 30, 2026, 11:19 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: 16 EU member states that remain parties to the international Energy Charter Treaty have been urged by the European Commission to leave, following the withdrawal last year of the EU and Euratom, its nuclear body. The commission has sent formal warnings, arguing that energy trade and investment fall under exclusive EU authority. The countries have two months to reply or face further legal steps, the commission said.
