Timetable for full phaseout of Russian gas imports set by Council of the EU (correct*)

( January 26, 2026, 12:10 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: EU imports of Russian liquefied natural gas and pipeline gas will be gradually prohibited, the Council of the EU said on Monday. The ban will start to apply six weeks after the regulation enters into force, but a transition period has been set up for existing contracts. The full ban will take effect at the beginning of 2027 for LNG, and from autumn 2027 for pipeline gas. EU countries must — by March 1 — submit national plans to diversify their gas sources, while companies will be required to notify the authorities and the commission of any remaining Russian gas contracts....
