EU eases car 2035 emissions target, adds flexibilities to support carmakers

( December 16, 2025, 16:12 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: European carmakers will have to comply with a reduced 90 percent tailpipe emissions reduction target by 2035, while the remaining 10 percent emissions will need to be compensated by using low-carbon EU-made steel or from e-fuels and biofuels, the European Commission said on Tuesday. The “pragmatic” Automotive Package aims to support the sector’s transition to clean mobility and leaves room for hybrids and combustion engines beyond 2035, it said. The plan also includes extra flexibilities for 2030 targets and small EU-made electric vehicles, and streamlines regulation, cuts compliance costs and directs €1.8 billion to bolstering the EU battery industry.Press release follows. ...
