Transport now EU's largest emitting sector, EU Commission climate report says

( November 6, 2025, 12:23 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The EU's overall emissions decreased 2.5 percent in 2024 over the previous year to stand at 37 percent below 1990 levels, the European Commission said in a new report released on Thursday, but transport emissions continued to rise. Domestic transport emissions grew by 0.7 percent, while maritime and aviation emissions increased by 3 percent, making transport the largest single emitting sector in the EU. Meanwhile, emissions from power and industrial installations covered by the EU emissions trading system fell by 5.8 percent. Decarbonizing the transport sector through the upcoming second emissions trading system and the related Social Climate Fund will be essential to achieving future emissions-reduction targets, the commission said.Full report attached....
