New Zealand bans energy giants from self-discounting to boost competition

( August 19, 2025, 02:38 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Large electricity producers have to offer their generation to all retailers at the same rate without allowing discounts to themselves under a new rule, the New Zealand government has announced. In a statement, Energy Minister Simon Watts said that currently large power companies can “cross-subsidize” themselves because they are both producers and retailers of energy. He added that the new rule agreed to by the Electricity Authority will require them to offer their generation at the same rate to everyone without offering themselves discounts. The minister said that this will level the playing field by “giving smaller companies a better chance to compete.”The full statement by New Zealand Energy Minister Simon Watts follows:...
