Spain denies Iberdrola-Endesa’s request to extend nuclear reactors’ lifespan

By Eleonora Rinaldi and Oscar Pandiello ( July 31, 2025, 13:48 GMT | Insight) -- Spanish energy giants Iberdrola and Endesa have failed for now to extend the operational life of their nuclear reactors beyond 2035 — as previously proposed — due to their failure to meet the government's conditions, according to the Spanish energy ministry. The ministry confirmed to MLex that the companies' submission was a “statement of intent” rather than a formal request involving all stakeholders of the affected plants. This suggests that the original phaseout plan remains in force for the time being.Iberdrola and Endesa may have to adhere to the original decommissioning timeline for their nuclear power plants in Spain, despite their request to postpone reactor shutdowns beyond 2035, MLex has learned....
