EU lawmakers reject fast-track procedure for negotiating 2040 climate targets

By Eleonora Rinaldi ( July 9, 2025, 11:06 GMT | Insight) -- The EU’s 2040 climate target proposal will proceed through the ordinary legislative process, after European lawmakers voted against using an urgency procedure during today’s full assembly in Strasbourg. The revised EU climate law will now undergo parliamentary negotiations led by the far-right Patriots for Europe group to establish a common position, which will then be discussed with the Council, representing member states, to reach a final agreement.The EU 2040 climate targets won’t be negotiated through a fast-track procedure, after lawmakers today voted against a request put forward by the Greens, Socialists & Democrats and Renew political parties yesterday (see here)....
