Poland should win appeal of fine for Turów lignite mining, EU court opinion says

( July 10, 2025, 09:38 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Poland should win its appeal against a daily penalty of 500,000 euros imposed until it stops mining operations at the Polish open-cast site in Turów, a legal opinion suggested today. The fine was upheld by the lower General Court last year. In her non-binding legal opinion for the bloc's top court, Advocate General Juliane Kokott said that the amicable agreement between the Czech Republic and Poland cancelled the penalty payment retroactively. Kokott therefore proposed that the lower court's ruling be set aside and the European Commission's offsetting annulled, finding that the regulator wrongly offset the penalty payment against Poland's claims on the EU budget.  Press release follows.
