Causes of April 28 Iberian blackout identified in Spanish report

( June 17, 2025, 15:55 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The power blackout in Spain and Portugal, which occurred on April 28, was caused by multiple factors, Spanish Energy Minister Sara Aagesen has said. Its three main causes were insufficient dynamic voltage control capability, combined with improper disconnections of power plants and atypical oscillations, according to a Spanish report published today. Large power plants contracted for voltage control failed to absorb enough reactive power, triggering a voltage increase. System operators didn't schedule additional power plants to compensate for the loss of reactive energy until it was too late to prevent the blackout. Oscillations in the system were addressed quickly, but these further increased voltage levels.
