Heavy-duty vehicle makers prefer electricity over hydrogen, says EU Commission

By Eleonora Rinaldi ( May 27, 2025, 15:15 GMT | Insight) -- Truck and bus manufacturers are choosing electricity over hydrogen to reduce their CO2 emissions, a European Commission report said today. With one in three new heavy-duty vehicles expected to be zero emissions by 2030, the report reviews the technology maturity and market readiness of various solutions to replace internal combustion engines which run on fossil fuels. Given hydrogen vehicles’ limited development and uncertainty over their uptake, the report suggests not widening the scope of mandatory targets for hydrogen infrastructure.Battery electric vehicles are the preferred investment for manufacturers of heavy-duty vehicles compared to fuel cell EVs or hydrogen-fueled vehicles, the EU’s executive arm said in a report (see here)....
