EU winter gas storage target should be cut to 83 percent, lawmakers vote

( May 8, 2025, 11:55 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Gas companies should have more flexible EU gas storage rules until the end of 2027, the European Parliament voted today. The full assembly voted 425 in favor and 106 against, with 43 abstentions, to water down the target winter gas storage level from 90 percent by Nov.1 to 83 percent by Dec. 1*, in order to tackle market speculation and help bring down prices. For unfavorable market conditions, that could be cut by four percentage points twice but only to a hard floor of 75 percent. Negotiations between the parliament’s energy committee, the Council of the EU, representing governments, and the European Commission will start on May 13 to adopt a final text, preferably before the end of June.Full press release follows: ...
