Korean Air, Asiana Airlines fined for breaching merger remedies

( December 22, 2025, 05:11 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Korean Air and Asiana Airlines have been fined 5.88 billion won ($3.9 million) and 580 million won, respectively, by South Korea’s antitrust regulator for failing to comply with merger remedies. The Korea Fair Trade Commission said that the airlines breached a behavioral remedy attached to the merger approval, which prevented them from reducing annual seat capacity below 90 percent of 2019 levels until structural remedies are completed. The KFTC found that the combined seat capacity of the two carriers on the Incheon-Frankfurt route fell to 69.5 percent of the 2019 level. The airlines remain subject to compliance monitoring by the KFTC through the end of 2034. The regulator imposed a package of structural and behavioral remedies on 26 international routes and eight domestic routes when it cleared the merger on Dec. 24, 2024.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
