South Korean privacy regulator plans higher 2027 spending on AI, breach responses

( September 4, 2026, 02:30 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s privacy regulator said Friday that 99.6 billion won ($73.3 million) has been included in the government’s proposed 2027 budget for the agency, up 37 percent from this year, with spending focused on preventive privacy protections, safe use of personal data for artificial intelligence and responses to data breaches. The Personal Information Protection Commission said 7.3 billion won is earmarked for preventive systems and 2.2 billion won for safe data use in AI transformation, including privacy-risk management and safeguards for the planned use of original personal data in AI development. The proposal also includes 1.6 billion won for litigation support, double this year’s amount, alongside funding for breach prevention, incident investigations and digital-forensics capabilities, as well as support for data-portability rights and the MyData ecosystem.Statements are attached (in Korean)....
