Australian watchdog urges greater transparency in government AI use
( August 26, 2026, 03:56 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Australia’s Information Commissioner Elizabeth Tydd on Tuesday said organizations must maintain transparency, accountability and strong information governance as they increasingly adopt artificial intelligence and automated decision-making. In a speech to the Australian Law Librarians' Association Conference, Tydd said the privacy watchdog found that only four of 23 government agencies authorized to use automated decision-making had disclosed its use as required under the 1982 Freedom of Information Act. She warned that AI should not undermine transparency or human-centered decision-making. From Dec. 10, entities covered by the 1988 Privacy Act will be required to disclose in their privacy policies the personal information they use in automated decision-making and the types of decisions made or substantially influenced by those systems.Speech follows. ...
