Telegram faces Australian court proceedings over failures to curb terror content

In a statement on Thursday, the Australian eSafety Commissioner said that following a year-long investigation, the regulator alleges that Telegram has failed to comply with systemic safety obligations under the Online Safety Act’s Relevant Electronic Services Standard. In its statement of claim filed in the Federal Court, the regulator alleges Telegram failed to implement adequate systems, processes and technology to detect and identify known pro-terror material distributed to users in Australia between July 10 and Oct. 24, 2025. The regulator said that failure to comply with Australia’s online-safety codes and standards could result in civil penalties of up to A$54.6 million ($38 million).Statement follows.
