South Korea to create dedicated taskforce to expedite privacy probes
( July 16, 2026, 03:13 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s privacy regulator plans to accelerate investigations into major data breaches by creating a dedicated taskforce for large-scale incidents involving 1 million records and introduce fast-track procedures for smaller cases. The Personal Information Protection Commission said Thursday that it briefed President Lee Jae Myung on its privacy-reform agenda. The agency said it will also pursue broader reforms to adapt the privacy framework to artificial intelligence by expanding legal grounds for processing personal data and establishing privacy principles for emerging technologies such as smart glasses. The PIPC also plans to clarify rules on handling deceased persons’ data.
