Western Australia privacy regulator not consulted on police biometric trials

In a statement published on Thursday, the Office of the Information Commissioner Western Australia said that facial images are sensitive personal information, which is subject to additional obligations under the 2024 Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act that commenced on July 1. The regulator welcomed Western Australia Police’s work towards addressing privacy risks and harms as part of the trial. While 10 deployments of facial recognition vans took place between June 22 and 28, four deployments have been scheduled between Thursday and Saturday.Statement is attached....
