Japan proposes new certification system to strengthen cybersecurity

( June 8, 2026, 06:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, together with the Innovation Platform Agency, Japan, on Friday released an interim report proposing a new certification system to strengthen oversight of cybersecurity service providers and enhance their reliability. The proposal follows recent cybersecurity incidents in Japan and offshore that occurred because of weaknesses in providers’ internal controls. The existing system sets only minimum standards for monitoring and registration, and cannot impose stricter operational requirements. Detailed design of the new scheme will start in fiscal 2026, which runs from April 2026 to March 2027, with a launch targeted for fiscal 2027, which runs from April 2027 to March 2028.The statement, in Japanese, is attached....
