Indonesia to use biometric mobile phone number registration to curb fraud

( June 1, 2026, 00:26 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs will implement full biometric registration for mobile phone numbers from July 1, 2026, for all new number activations. Edwin Hidayat Abdullah, the director general for the digital ecosystem, said Friday the policy is designed to enhance public trust and safeguard citizens against increasing digital fraud, spam calls, phishing attempts and the misuse of mobile numbers tied to fake identities. He confirmed that all mobile operators have completed necessary system adjustments for the implementation. The biometric registration process uses facial recognition technology to verify customer identities by cross-referencing population data managed by the directorate general of population and civil registration under the Ministry of Home affairs.Statement follows (in Indonesian)...
