Japan cabinet approves bill to amend personal data law for parliament submission

( April 7, 2026, 07:30 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Japanese Cabinet on Tuesday approved a bill to amend the Act on the Protection of Personal Information, which will be submitted to parliament shortly. The proposed amendments would introduce an administrative fine system and strengthen protections for the personal data of minors under the age of 16. At the same time, the bill would allow easier use of sensitive personal data for statistical purposes, including the training of artificial intelligence, and would relax certain data-breach notification requirements.
