Japan SMEs lack adequate data protection, security measures, regulator says

( March 31, 2026, 06:54 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan’s data protection authority has identified weak privacy and security measures among small and medium-sized enterprises in a recent survey. According to results published on Monday by the Personal Information Protection Commission, nearly two-thirds of surveyed companies do not have a designated official responsible for personal data protection. More than one-third said they lack sufficient knowledge of the personal-information protection law and are unsure how to respond. Even among the 2.3 percent of respondents that experienced unauthorized access, fewer than 40 percent took steps to prevent a recurrence. Only about 15 percent of respondents were aware of the PPC, underscoring the need for the regulator to strengthen outreach and improve SMEs’ understanding of data protection and security measures.The statements, in Japanese, are attached. ...
