Coupang breach probe findings point to stolen key, weak controls, South Korea says

( February 10, 2026, 05:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Coupang is facing enforcement action after South Korea’s science ministry concluded a network intrusion exploited a weakness in the company’s user authentication system, enabling unauthorized access and large-scale scraping of customer data. The Ministry of Science and ICT on Tuesday said the attacker, identified as a former Coupang developer, stole a signing key tied to Coupang’s “electronic pass” authentication and used forged passes to bypass gateway checks. Based on access logs, the ministry said the breach included about 33.7 million “My Info” records containing names and emails, plus extensive views of pages showing names, phone numbers, addresses and, in some cases, shared-entrance passwords, while noting the final breach count will be confirmed separately by the privacy watchdog. The ministry said it will fine Coupang for late reporting under the network law and has referred the company for investigation over an alleged violation of a log-preservation order after the loss or deletion of web and app access logs.Statement is attached (in Korean)....
