Snap locked 415,000 accounts under social-media ban for under 16s in Australia

( February 2, 2026, 01:07 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: California-based social-media company Snap locked over 415,000 Snapchat accounts of users under the age of 16 in Australia as of January 2026, the platform said. In a statement on Monday, Snap said the platform locked or disabled accounts of users who either declared an age under 16 or who were believed to be under 16 based on age-detection technology. The platform also said that there are real technical limitations to "accurate and dependable" age verification. Snap added that the current approach of the Social Media Minimum Age laws' implementation lacks industry-wide protections “leaving vulnerabilities with hundreds of other apps that are either not in-scope of this law or where it is unclear.”Statement follows....
