Tmoney fined 534 million won for data breach in South Korea

( January 29, 2026, 04:38 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s transportation-card and mobile-payment operator Tmoney was fined 534 million won ($374,393) by the Personal Information Protection Commission on Thursday for a data breach that exposed the personal information of 51,691 users and resulted in the theft of 14 million won in mileage points from 4,131 user accounts. The PIPC concluded that Tmoney failed to detect and block abnormal login attempts during a credential-stuffing attack on its website in March 2025. Hackers used 9,647 domestic and foreign IP addresses and attempted more than 12.26 million log-ins, with peak traffic reaching 131 attempts per second, about 68 times higher than usual traffic levels. The PIPC also ordered Tmoney to publicly disclose the data breach on its website and required it to establish concrete measures to prevent recurrence.Statement is attached (in Korean)....
