Japan's privacy watchdog begins triennial review of national ID-breach response

( January 29, 2026, 02:58 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan's Personal Information Protection Commission said late Wednesday that it has kicked off the triennial review of the guideline on protecting national-identification numbers. The Specific Personal Information Assessment guideline is applicable to those who store and process the so-called MyNumbers, namely governmental and municipal agencies as well as insurers. The PPC aims to finish the first draft by the end of the year, which will then undergo further edits after a public consultation and go in effect by April 2027.
