Indonesia mandates biometric SIM registration to curb data misuse

( January 26, 2026, 08:21 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs said Friday it has issued a new regulation requiring biometric-based mobile phone registration, including facial recognition, to combat digital fraud and misuse of personal data. The rules mandate know-your-customer checks, limit prepaid SIM ownership to three numbers per operator per individual and require SIM cards to be sold inactive until registration is verified. Telecom operators must ensure the security and confidentiality of customer data, comply with international information security standards and implement fraud-prevention systems, the ministry said. Transitional provisions give telecom operators up to six months to align certain registration processes with the new biometric requirements. Numbers already registered before the regulation was promulgated remain valid and may continue to be used.Statement follows; regulation is attached (both in Indonesian)....
