US Supreme Court to review geofence warrants in case involving Google

By Mike Swift ( January 16, 2026, 23:38 GMT | Insight) -- The US Supreme Court has agreed to review the constitutionality of geofencing — technology that allows platforms like Google to record precise location data and create a list of users within a given geographic area at a given time, which can be of use in police investigations. The American Civil Liberties Union and other critics argue that geofence warrants lack the predicate showing of probable cause and particularity, as well as the judicial oversight, required by the Fourth Amendment, which guards against unreasonable searches.The US Supreme Court will review whether the use of geofence warrants, requiring Google and other companies to turn over data about all users within a particular geographic area, complies with Fourth Amendment privacy protections....
