South Korea faults KT in femtocell breach probe; LG Uplus case sent to police

( December 29, 2025, 08:13 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Findings from breach investigations involving KT and LG Uplus were announced Monday by South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT, which said KT’s femtocell security weaknesses allowed an illegal device to connect to its internal network and enable the theft of subscriber identifiers. The ministry said the KT case involved leaks of 22,227 IMSI/IMEI-linked subscriber data sets and phone numbers, and led to 777 unauthorized micro-payment transactions affecting 368 users totaling 243 million won ($170,000). It concluded that KT was at fault and had breached its core duty to provide safe telecom service, a finding that could open the door to early-termination fee waivers under KT’s terms. In LG Uplus’ case, the ministry said it could not fully verify what happened due to false submissions and the reinstallation or disposal of key servers, and it referred the matter to police on suspicion of obstruction by deception.The statement is attached (Korean)....
