Shinhan Card probed in South Korea after report alleges merchant data handed to card recruiters

( December 24, 2025, 06:23 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Shinhan Card is under investigation by South Korea’s privacy watchdog after a public-interest report prompted a fact-check that turned up signs of a possible personal-data breach. The Personal Information Protection Commission said it has been conducting the probe since Dec. 16, and is examining the precise circumstances, scope and data categories involved, as well as whether Shinhan Card violated the Personal Information Protection Act. According to the regulator, the report alleges that a Shinhan Card sales branch illegally provided information, including merchant names and mobile phone numbers linked to newly installed card terminals, to card recruiters and others for card-issuance marketing from March 2022 to May 2025. The regulator said it will take action under the law if violations are found, and coordinate closely with financial authorities if needed.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
