California poised to unveil 'completely unique' data broker privacy platform

By Mike Swift ( December 24, 2025, 15:20 GMT | Comment) -- Californians starting Jan. 1 will get a privacy tool that the state's privacy watchdog, CalPrivacy, calls unique in the world, when the state’s Delete Request and Opt-Out Platform, DROP, goes live, allowing California residents on one website to require data brokers to delete any data held about the resident making the request. “It should have some significant impact in terms of reducing the digital footprint that we have,” Tom Kemp, the executive director of CalPrivacy, told MLex in an interview.Californians are about to receive a new privacy tool that’s unique in the world: An online portal where they can order every one of the more than 500 data brokers registered by the state to delete their personal data....
